Who should we back?

We put 20% of our profits into companies going employee-owned. You help pick.

Organisations asking for funding

Back as many as you like — supporting one never takes a vote from another.

No applications have been published yet. Every one is read by a person before it appears here.

Applying takes about ten minutes

Employee-owned companies, worker cooperatives, and businesses converting to either. You do not need to be listed in the directory. Applications are always open — there is no deadline and no round to miss, and yours starts collecting votes as soon as we publish it.

Apply for a grant

Applications are open. The fund is not yet funded — we publish what is in it the moment there is anything, and nothing is waiting on that.

Get told when the fund has money

Applications are always open, so there is nothing to wait for to apply. This is one email when there is money in the fund to give away.

How it works

  1. 01

    We publish the pool, quarterly

Twenty per cent of the profit Commonwealth made over the quarter, with the arithmetic shown. A quarter that lost money has no profit to share, and we say that rather than inventing a number.

  2. 02

    Companies apply

Employee-owned companies, worker cooperatives, and businesses converting to either. You do not need to be listed in the directory — the companies that most need this are usually the ones not listed yet. Every application is read by a person before it appears on this page.

  3. 03

    Anyone with an account votes

One vote per person per organisation, kept for as long as the application is up, and withdrawable any time. Back as many as you like — supporting one never takes a vote from another, which is what makes an applicant's own share link worth sending. An account is required because an anonymous count is gamed the day someone finds it, and a number nobody believes is worth less than no number.

  4. 04

We award, and show our work

A quarter may fund one organisation or several — a bigger pool is split rather than concentrated, because two conversions getting over the line beats one getting a round number. The vote is the strongest input, not the whole decision. Every award is published here with the amount, the date, and why that applicant.
